The Dancing for a Difference™ philosophy has been an ongoing effort to provide outlets for children to make a difference in other people's lives. This has resulted in over $64,000 since 2003 in donations to The Greater Pittsburgh Women's Center and Shelter, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Make-A-Wish Foundation®, Gilda's Club, The Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Juvenile Diabetes, and Autism Speaks.
In 2009, the decision was made to sponsor the first Unity In Community event. Dance Workshop has always played a very active role in the South Hills with participation in Community Days celebrations, church festivals, day camps for children, fundraising events, and senior citizen home performances. To kick off the addition of fitness classes to the studio offerings, we sponsored our first ever 5K Run/1 Mile Walk under the "Unity in Community" name to promote healthy lifestyles among the children and adults in the area. Instead of raising money to donate to national non-profits, we decided to provide assistance to non-profits in our own communities. By inviting area schools and churches to form teams and raise pledges, we allowed them to raise money to further their children's programs. In addition, money was also donated to one of our Dancing For A Difference children's charities (Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
In the two years that we sponsored this event, we were able to donate approximately $6,800 to the participating teams for their charities.
We will continue to sponsor Unity in Community events in the future. The common theme will be to reach out to families and friends in the South Hills to inspire and excite the youth to help others through their actions.
